Escape to Bakkrans Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival and Sunset Exploration

Arrive at Bakkrans, a 6000-hectare private concession in the remote Cederberg region. Settle into a stone-walled, thatched cottage, modelled after early herders’ homes. Your guide will share details of the reserve’s conservation work, including efforts to reintroduce Cape mountain zebra and oryx. After unpacking, take a guided walk to explore the unique flora and fauna, and view ancient San rock paintings, dating back thousands of years. The Cederberg’s rugged landscape, part of a World Heritage Site, reveals the natural diversity of the Cape Floral Region. Relax with sundowners overlooking the vast Tankwa Karoo semi-desert. Enjoy a traditional South African braai, and end the night stargazing under the region’s exceptionally clear, unpolluted skies.

Day 2

Wildlife, Conservation, and Adventure

Morning: Start with a leisurely breakfast before a challenging hike into the mountains. Your guide will share insights on endemic Cederberg plant life and lead you to less-visited rock art sites. Keep watch for signs of Cape leopard, a secretive predator, along with sightings of klipspringer, dassies, and rare birds.
Midday: Return for lunch and take time to relax. Opt for a 4×4 adventure deeper into the reserve, exploring hidden valleys and enjoying panoramic views, or unwind at your cottage, savouring the quiet surroundings.
Afternoon: Visit a local conservation project within the Cederberg Conservancy. Learn about initiatives to protect endangered species, remove invasive plants, and restore the natural landscape. This hands-on experience connects you to the land’s conservation efforts.
