What We Love

Wildlife

Four white rhino live on the ranch, alongside elephant, Grevy’s zebra and a huge pride of lion. The Ewaso Nyiro draws birds throughout the day. Fish eagles, hooded vultures and many other species spend time along the river.

Experience

Days combine game drives, short guided walks, community visits and bush meals. Children join Kenya’s first Bush School, learning to track and sculpt with clay. There are no age limits, so whole families can share a safari in Kenya together.

Impact

The Grant family has ranched this land for nearly 60 years. Today they are rewilding it and protecting it for conservation. The lodge runs on solar power, and most meals come from its own organic garden.

About El Karama lodge

Eight cottages of stone, thatch and canvas sit along the river. Furniture is built from wood found on the ranch, and baths are made from black river stone. Hobbit House sleeps six across two storeys. Nilotica House has four suites, a wraparound deck and its own vehicle, and sleeps up to ten. The two River Cottages sit apart, with a private dining area and lounge. At the main lodge, the mess has a large fireplace, a bar and a reading corner. The pool looks over the river, where animals come down to drink. Guests can help knead the dough for the day’s bread. A Kenyan team, many of whom helped build the lodge, hosts each stay.
