Best Time to Visit Namibia
Month by Month Safari Guide
Namibia is one of Africa’s most spectacular safari destinations, offering dramatic desert landscapes, abundant wildlife, and unique cultural experiences. But knowing when to visit Namibia can make a huge difference to your safari experience. Weather, wildlife activity, and road conditions vary throughout the year, so timing your trip carefully ensures you get the most out of every day. I’ve put in the hours, days and months of travelling across Namibia so you can make use of my knowledge and experience! I’ve driven from Orange River in deep south of the country all the way along the Caprivi strip many times, in different weather conditions. This is my guide to when to visit Namibia and why.
This month-by-month Namibia safari guide will help you plan your adventure, highlighting the best months for wildlife sightings, photography, comfortable temperatures, and fewer crowds. Whether you’re visiting Etosha National Park to see elephants and lions, exploring the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei / Namib Desert, or seeking the elusive desert-adapted elephants of Damaraland, this guide will show you when each area is at its best.
Namibia’s year can be divided into two main seasons:
- Dry Season (May–October): Cooler temperatures, minimal rainfall, and waterholes that concentrate wildlife — ideal for first-time safari-goers and photographers.
- Green Season (November–April): Warmer temperatures, occasional rains, lush landscapes, and abundant birdlife — perfect for birdwatchers, photographers, and those seeking fewer crowds.
We’ve included tables with average daytime and nighttime temperatures (°C/°F) and rainfall for key safari regions, plus accessibility notes and tips for each month.
